Came with one more authentic recipe of fish in Odisha.

The role of rohu is also considered a delicacy in odisha, West Bengal, Bhojpur and Andhra Pradesh and among  Odiya's ,Bengalis and Nepalis. It is deep fried and served hot as an appetizer as part of a  Odisha , Bengali and Bihari,meal. Rohu is also served deep fried in mustard oil, as kaliya, which is a rich gravy made of a concoction of spices and deeply browned onions. Rohu fish is also cooked in a tangy sauce made of tamarind and mustard. Rohu is also very popular in northern India and Pakistan, as in the province of Punjab. In Lahore it is a specialty of Lahori cuisine in "Lahori fried fish" where it is prepared with batter and spices. It is also a very popular food fish in Iraq.

I have came with my Version of Rohu Fish Curry/Rohi Macha kaliya/Roho Labeo (Labeo rohita) Curry/Mānasollāsa..Delicious,Easy, simple version.Hope you all will like it.


 Rohu Fish Curry/Rohi Macha kaliya/Roho Labeo (Labeo rohita) Curry/Mānasollāsa

For Rohu curry

Rohu fried Fish(Curry Cut)- 8 pieces( how to do fish fry

Masala Paste(grind onion,garlic,ginger,coriander seeds,cumin,dry red chilli,green chiili,bay leaf)
Potatoes(2 Medium size) chopped in slices(optional)
4 Medium Onion(fine slices)
1 Medium Tomato (fine slice)
1 bay leaf
1 inch cinnamon (crushed)
2 cardamom (crushed)
1/4 cup Mustard oil(7-8)tbsp
1 tbsp Kashmir chilli powder
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1/2 tsp sugar
Salt to taste
1tbsp freshly chopped coriander leaves 
11/2 cup Water

For Masala

2 Medium onions(roughly chopped)

Garlic 8-10 pods
Ginger 1inch (roughly chopped)
Coriander seeds 1tsp
Cumin Seeds 1tsp
2 Dry red chilli
1 Green chilli
1 small Bay Leaf

Procedure to Make Masala:

Place all ingredients into mixie jar and put little water and  grind to paste.


  • Place a heavy bottom pan or kadhai put the oil and once the oil is heated, add the sugar
  • Let the sugar to caramelized (don't burn it) ,add crushed cinamon, cradmom and bay leaf, saute it for a minute
  • Add sliced onions,and saute till it turns golden brown(tips: add salt in this stage as it helps the onion to cook fast)
  • Now add in tomatoes and cook till the tomatoes turn little mushy.
  • Now add the turmeric and chilli powder,saute it for a few seconds
  • Time for masala to go in, saute it till it roasted and cooked( all raw smell of masala goes off and oil start coming from sides)
  • Now add fried potatoes or you and raw potatoes after adding masala
  • Now add water and bring this whole thing to a good boil, cover and simmer till oil floats on top.
  • Now add in fried fish and cook for 10 mins.
  • garnish it with chopped coriander leaves.
  • Fish curry/Macha kaliya serve hot with rice or chapatis( Indian breads).
